Description

Photographs by Howard Tan

Revised, Second Edition

This book offers the first detailed account of the individuals and families who arrived as settlers, traders, miners, cooks and explorers and made Penang their home.

Along the way they made fortunes in tin, opium, rubber and commerce, created empires, and left legacies that became the stuff of legends. This is the story of those skilled opportunists, and of the mansions they built, the architects they employed and the fortunes they made and lost.

With over 200 photographs detailing their journey, these are the priceless stories of the individuals and families that ultimately made Penang.
